About the program

Executive Medical Management (15 credits, advanced level) aims to increase understanding of the conditions, governance and opportunities for innovation and transformation in the healthcare and life science sectors.

The programme comprises 16 full days divided into eight modules and covers, among other things, healthcare management, health economics, innovation and transformation, IT and law. The modules are delivered once a month. Read more about the content of each module under Structure.

The programme is coordinated by the Centre for Health Governance at the University of Gothenburg.

Module leads come from the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology and have been selected based on their extensive expertise in the healthcare sector and documented experience of delivering advanced academic programmes. The programme is complemented by guest lecturers who contribute current perspectives on relevant areas of development and represent a diversity of experience and viewpoints.

The programme focuses on providing the knowledge and developing the skills required to lead complex healthcare operations, drive and implement change using digital solutions, and use innovation as a tool in both public and private organisations. Particular emphasis is placed on theories and models and their importance for practical application.

The programme is based on the need for effective collaboration between public and private actors in the development and delivery of healthcare services, pharmaceuticals and medical technology. This requires a mutual understanding of different institutional conditions and operating environments.

Teaching combines lectures with group-based discussions. Practical examples from successful organisations are continuously integrated and adapted to each module’s content and relevance.

After completing the programme, the participant will be able to:

  1. describe the conditions of the healthcare sector from a business, health economics, legal and innovation perspective
  2. apply relevant concepts and models to analyse governance, management and the development of transformation and innovation in public and private organisations in the healthcare sector
  3. critically analyse and compare different strategies for transformation and innovation in the healthcare sector and assess their consequences for organisations and leadership

Structure

Target group:

Leaders in healthcare and life science who are responsible for complex operations in health and medicine, where transformation, innovation and implementation are an integral part of day-to-day leadership.

The programme is particularly suitable for you if you:

wish to develop your ability to lead and drive change in complex healthcare. You want to understand how leadership, governance, economics, digitalisation, innovation and law interact, and gain new perspectives and tools to develop your own organisation and contribute to change at organisational and system level.

Pedagogical model.

The programme is delivered over eight two-day sessions with the following overall structure, which can be adapted as needed for each module:

Day 1 Morning
Reflection on the material from the previous session and its connection to the participant’s own organisation.

Day 1 Afternoon
Introduction and theoretical perspectives on the session’s main theme, including group discussions.

Day 2 Afternoon
Guest lecture: Practitioners or researchers share particularly successful or challenging experiences related to the theme. The session is complemented by further lectures and group discussions.

Day 2 Afternoon
Further lectures focusing on clarifying the session’s examination assignment.

Assessment.

Assessment is carried out through written reflections on the participant’s own organisation, based on a selected aspect within each of the eight themes covered during the programme. The assessment thus consists of a total of eight written assignments. To pass the programme, the participant must submit and receive a pass on at least six of the eight assignments.

The purpose of this assessment format is to ensure that the programme content remains actively present for participants throughout the programme and to promote deeper reflection on their own organisation in relation to the various themes addressed.

Entry requirements

Admission to the programme is based on the following entry requirements and selection principles. All entry requirements must be met for an applicant to be eligible for the programme.

Meeting the entry requirements does not automatically mean that the applicant will be admitted. The number of places on the programme is limited, and selection is based on an overall assessment of the applicant’s strategic mandate, leadership experience, professional background and potential to contribute to the programme. Admission is offered to applicants deemed by the admissions committee to be best suited to the programme and who contribute to a strong and well-balanced group composition.

1. Nomination from the organisation.

The applicant must be formally nominated by their organisation.

The nomination letter must clearly state, among other things:

The applicant’s current role and areas of responsibility
The applicant’s importance to the organisation’s development
The organisation’s reasons for the nomination
How the applicant is expected to contribute to the programme
The nomination letter must be submitted using the established template. The template will be sent by email after the application has been submitted.

2. Leadership experience.

The applicant must have at least five (5) years of relevant managerial and/or leadership experience.

This normally means experience of managing other managers or having overall strategic leadership responsibility.

As complex organisations can be structured in different ways and senior leadership roles do not always follow traditional hierarchical structures, other forms of leadership experience may also be considered. This may, for example, include:

Strategic responsibility for areas where collaboration between actors in the life science ecosystem is central, or
Documented leadership in complex organisations or cross-organisational structures, even when the role has not included formal staff responsibility.

3. Professionally active in life science.

The applicant must be professionally active in the life science field.

The term is interpreted broadly and includes, for example, healthcare organisations, public authorities, academia, research infrastructure, regulatory bodies and relevant parts of industry.

The programme aims to strengthen the long-term supply of leadership and competence at a strategic level within the sector. Therefore, applicants with strategic responsibility for organisational development and collaboration within the life science ecosystem are prioritised.

4. Academic degree.

The applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree of at least 180 higher education credits (ECTS) or an equivalent international degree.

A formal academic degree is a mandatory entry requirement.

5. English language proficiency.

The applicant must have a very good command of English and be able to actively participate in advanced discussions and assimilate complex academic literature and teaching in English, as the entire programme is delivered in English.

6. Admissions interview.

As part of the admissions process, applicants may be invited to an interview, which is normally conducted online via a digital meeting platform.

The purpose of the interview is to ensure that the entry requirements are met and to assess the applicant’s suitability, strategic mandate and fit with the group.

If an interview is requested, participation is mandatory for the applicant to be considered for admission.
