About the program

AI has moved from being a future issue to a leadership issue, and for an increasing number of organisations it is now about understanding how the technology affects decisions, value creation, ways of working, and competitiveness.

At the same time, many leaders grapple with the same questions: where do we start, what should we prioritise, and how do we distinguish real business value from technology noise?

AI for Executives is a five-day programme that gives you, as a leader, the knowledge and tools to lead the transformation or implementation of AI in your organisation.

The programme is designed to help leaders navigate this development. It is continuously refined in close collaboration between Stockholm University, Uppsala University, the University of Gothenburg, and AI Sweden, ensuring content that is research-based, business-relevant, and directly applicable.
Through a combination of academic depth, practical experience, and links to AI Sweden’s national ecosystem, you gain perspectives from research, industry, the public sector, and the broader AI landscape in Sweden.

The programme is developed not only to keep pace with AI, but to give you, as a leader, better conditions to stay one step ahead.

What will the programme provide?

AI for Executives gives you, as a leader, a clearer understanding of AI as a strategic leadership issue and strengthens your ability to translate AI into decisions, priorities, and tangible business value.

Through the programme, you will develop your ability to:

make more informed strategic decisions about AI.
identify and prioritise the right initiatives and investments.
conduct qualified dialogues with AI experts, both internally and externally.
understand how AI affects business, organisation, governance, and leadership.
move from individual AI initiatives to real business value.

You do not need a technical background. However, you will gain the understanding and commissioning competence required to ask better questions, make sounder decisions, and lead your organisation in a time when AI is changing both ways of working and strategic opportunities.

Structure

Target group:

Leaders who need to develop their knowledge and understanding of strategic AI and want tools to lead the implementation of AI in their organisations.

The programme is particularly suitable for you if you:

want to understand how AI can create value in the organisation and become better at assessing opportunities, asking the right questions, and making well-founded decisions about AI. You want to be able to hold qualified conversations with experts, employees, and other key stakeholders and translate AI into practical organisational development.

AI for Executives is delivered over five days. The first four days are divided into two two-day modules and are delivered within each university’s programme cycle in Stockholm, Uppsala, or Gothenburg. The final day brings together participants from all programme cycles at AI Sweden for continued learning, networking, and connection to Sweden’s AI ecosystem. It takes you step by step from understanding to strategic direction, prioritisation, accountability, and concrete capacity for action.

MODULE 1 The module strengthens the leader’s ability to understand the AI shift and set strategic direction in a rapidly changing world. The focus is on moving from AI insight to prioritised opportunities, concrete AI cases, and organisational capacity for action.

Day 1:

The AI shift – from understanding to strategic direction in the organisation.

The day provides a shared understanding of the AI shift and shows how leaders can understand the technology, view data as a strategic asset, and make the decisions required to translate AI into direction, prioritisation, and practical business value.

AI as a driver of the organisation of the future.

Why AI is not only a technical development, but a force for strategic renewal.
How AI is changing competition, productivity, decision-making, and societal development.
What leaders need to understand to set direction without getting stuck in hype or technical details.
Introduction to the programme’s core question: how do we move from AI insight to organisational capacity for action?

AI under the hood – what leaders need to understand to put AI into practice.

A foundational understanding of artificial intelligence, machine learning, generative AI, and agentic systems.
What the technology can, cannot, and is likely soon to be able to do.
A practical AI lab where participants get to try tools, ways of working, and leadership-relevant use cases.
Focus on building confidence, curiosity, and a realistic technical understanding.

Data as a strategic asset.

How data becomes a prerequisite for AI value and why becoming a data-driven organisation is crucial.
How organisations can identify and prioritise their most important data issues – what data do we have, what data do we need, and how do we create it?
What leadership needs to understand about different types of data, data quality, data governance, ownership, and how the organisation’s data is structured.

Day 2:

From uncertainty to strategic opportunities.

The day strengthens the leader’s ability to set direction amid complexity and uncertainty, and to identify, assess, and prioritise AI opportunities that can be translated into tangible business value.

The link between the organisation’s ability to use data and AI strategy.
How AI affects strategic thinking in complex and rapidly changing environments.
The difference between traditional planning and adaptive strategy.
How leaders can work with uncertainty, experimentation, and learning as strategic tools.
Workshop where participants work with AI application in their own strategic contexts.

Create value with the right AI cases.

How organisations identify, assess, and prioritise relevant AI use cases.

A method for linking use cases to value creation, risk, feasibility, and organisational capability.

MODULE 2 The module strengthens the leader’s ability to lead AI responsibly, build organisational change capability, and navigate a changing future. The focus is on moving from insight to strategic choices, concrete priorities, and capacity for action.

Responsible AI that builds trust and change capability.

The day strengthens the leader’s ability to use accountability, ethics, and clear governance as a foundation for trust, and to build the organisational capability required to implement AI in a sustainable way.

What the EU AI Act and the regulatory landscape mean for leadership and operations.
How ethics, risk, and compliance can become part of innovation work.
A practical bias audit where participants review AI risks in concrete applications.

Day 4:

From future vision to capacity for action.

The day strengthens the leader’s ability to explore possible AI futures, make strategic choices, and translate the programme’s insights into prioritised decisions, concrete next steps, and an action plan for the coming 100 days.

How AI can change business models, value chains, customer relationships, and societal roles.
Introduction to future-oriented strategy work for leadership under uncertainty.

Summary and deepening of the programme’s four days: strategy, technology, data, ethics, organisation, and execution capability.

Developing a concrete 100-day plan for your organisation.

MODULE 3 A shared final day at AI Sweden with expert insights, networking, and an introduction to Sweden’s AI ecosystem. The day provides inspiration and concrete points of contact for continued learning, collaboration, and AI development in your organisation.

Day 5:

Learning and networking at AI Sweden for continued AI development.

The day brings together participants from the programme cycles in Stockholm, Uppsala, and Gothenburg for a shared full-day conclusion at AI Sweden, focusing on expert insights, networking, and the continued path towards practical implementation of AI in their own organisations.

During the day, participants are introduced to AI Sweden’s national ecosystem, including regional nodes, industry partners, and relevant networks that can support continued learning, knowledge sharing, and collaboration.

Through presentations and deep dives in areas such as language technology, edge learning, and other current AI fields, participants gain both inspiration and concrete points of contact for the work ahead.

The full day thus becomes not only a conclusion to the programme, but also a starting point for long-term engagement in Sweden’s AI ecosystem and for continued AI development in participants’ own organisations.

Lecturer

Victor AppelgrenVictor Appelgren is the overall Programme Director, responsible for the learning experience for the AI for Executives modules delivered at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg.

Victor Appelgren is an AI specialist with expertise in generative AI, agent-based AI systems, and AI implementation.

Victor previously worked at the University of Gothenburg, where he lectured on the application of generative AI and advanced data analysis, and worked on developing and implementing AI solutions in areas including education and financial analysis. He also led projects in generative AI and served as academic program director for AI for Executives.

Today, Victor combines his technical experience with his role as Senior Solutions Architect at Advania and Senior Advisor for AI for Executives. In these roles, he helps organizations turn AI opportunities into strategic and operational value.

Göran LindsjöGöran Lindsjö advises executive teams and policymakers in Europe and North America on strategic AI issues.

Göran Lindsjö advises executive teams and policymakers in Europe and North America on strategic AI issues. He is a former serial entrepreneur in AI and has many years of experience in board work and advisory board assignments, as well as at the Government Offices of Sweden, where he worked on governance issues in digitalisation and AI.

Göran Lindsjö recently moved back to Sweden after many years, based in Washington, DC, during which he was active in the transformation of several North American organisations. He is also a Senior Advisor to AI Sweden.

Johan MagnussonJohan Magnusson is Professor of Informatics at the University of Gothenburg and Director of the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation (SCDI). His research focuses on how digital technology changes fundamental aspects of organisations and society, and how digital transformation should be led.

Johan Magnusson is included in Tech 50 (the 50 most influential people in technology in Sweden) and is recognised as one of the three most influential people regarding the digital transformation of the public sector. He is also engaged with industry, including as a board member and a highly regarded lecturer.

Matilda ArvidssonMatilda Arvidsson is Associate Professor of International Law and Assistant Senior Lecturer in General Jurisprudence at the Department of Law at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Her interdisciplinary research spans AI and law, legal philosophy, international law, and how future laws can regulate interaction between humans, animals, nature, and technology.

Matilda Arvidsson is Associate Professor of International Law and Assistant Senior Lecturer in General Jurisprudence at the Department of Law at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Her interdisciplinary research spans AI and law, legal philosophy, international law, and how future laws can regulate interaction between humans, animals, nature, and technology.

She leads a major research project on AI, the social contract, and democracy, and has published a number of articles in the AI field.

Matilda Arvidsson is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence: Law & Technology and Law, Technology and Humans. She is also editor of AI, Law and Politics – a book series for innovative research on AI, law, and society published by Routledge.

Miroslaw StaronMiroslaw Staron is Professor of Software Engineering at the IT Faculty at the University of Gothenburg. His research covers software development for automotive applications, software efficiency, data warehouses, and performance profiling for products and organisations.

Professor Staron has written three books on software architecture, measurement, and collaboration with industry. He is an experienced and highly regarded lecturer in commissioned education and short programmes for managers and leaders in the private and public sectors.

Johan RipgårdenJohan Ripgården has 25 years of experience working as a consultant in business-critical IT solutions. His profile is characterised by his early commitment to broadening perspectives in client assignments by starting from desired business benefits and integrating people and processes as central perspectives in often overly technology-focused IT projects.

Johan Ripgården has worked closely with a wide range of organisations in both the private and public sectors and is currently a Senior Advisor in analytics and AI at Atea Sweden. He is responsible for business development in these areas and has developed the advisory concepts that Atea offers its customers. The concepts are intended for organisations that either want to begin their AI journey or are ready to develop their operations using AI through a broad approach.

Conny SvenssonConny Svensson leads the AI Adoption area at AI Sweden. The focus of the work is to stimulate and strengthen organisations in their AI maturity so that they can create scalable and sustainable value with AI.

Robin TeiglandRobin Teigland is Professor of Strategy and Digitalization in the Entrepreneurship and Strategy division at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, and her research focuses on the intersection of strategy, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Robin Teigland’s research focuses on the intersection of strategy, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. She is particularly interested in exploring how new technology challenges assumptions about society’s value creation that are currently taken for granted, and she has co-authored more than 100 articles and books in the field. She is also co-founder of Peniche Ocean Watch – an ocean innovation initiative that uses digital technology for a blue circular economy.

Professor Teigland is often interviewed in Swedish and international media, is an internationally sought-after speaker, and has on several occasions been listed as one of the Global Top 50 Business Professors on Twitter.
