Becoming an Executive MBA participant in October 2009 was the result of a personal development plan I had agreed on with my sponsor at Roche.

With dual diplomas in chemistry and in pharmaceutics, I joined Roche Diagnostics Scandinavia AB in 2006, a sales affiliate of Swiss multinational F Hoffman-La Roche which has 81 500 employees. The group focuses on developing medicines and diagnostics through excellence in science.

In 2007, I was promoted account manager. As part of a young, energetic sales organisation, I was proud to be selected first for a Swedish and then for a global talent development programme. So within Roche, careful consideration had to be given to the next step in my career development.

At Roche, for most everyday activities we have a global perspective: for example, successfully selling into the highly developed Swedish market requires a continuous two-way dialogue with our Swiss headquarters on how local market needs will drive product and marketing strategies.

While thoroughly enjoying my current sales responsibilities, I know my future positions would require me to develop broader business management skills within a multinational group like ours.

Because of its focus on global business management, the Executive MBA programme proposed by the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg struck an immediate chord with me. I took the initiative to propose the programme to my sponsor. I appreciate the way the School adapts the curriculum to participants like me, to accommodate my day-by-day business responsibilities. One of the very first courses, “Leadership and Strategy”, enabled me to acquire brand new insights and tools that I could immediately apply at Roche. I could now engage with my management to propose new angles and solutions to the challenges which we were facing – sharing my new ways of thinking!

There is tremendous potential for immediate personal growth on the programme.The on-campus style of the Executive MBA programme is modern, informal and yet academically stringent. It brings out the best of all the participants. The programme suits me every bit as well as expected, as it does for my sponsor.

My sponsor and my CEO both follow my progress on the programme with great enthusiasm. Ever since enrolling, we engage in an on-going open dialogue on my own long term ambitions, shaping my post-Executive MBA plan in good time before graduation. In essence, the programme is a very natural step in helping to build my continued career at Roche.
